When it rains the rays of the hygroscopic earthstar (Astraeus hygrometricus) absorb moisture and unfold, exposing the puffball-like spore sac. When a rain drop hits the sac, it forces spores out through a hole. Santa Monica Mountains, December 15, 2012.
